Solar elementary school Manuel

The four buildings of the Manuel elementary school in the city of Bern, built in 1952, were renovated in the period 2016-2020 and complemented by two new Minergie-P buildings to create an aesthetically uniform ensemble.  The perfect roof integration of the 610 kW PV systems is outstanding and exemplary. They produce around 580,000 kWh per year. It is to the credit of Hochbau Stadt Bern that this building construction intervention has resulted in an aesthetically exemplary PV roof integration and a clear architectural enhancement of the district. The office also acted in an exemplary manner when it prevented the disfigurement of the protected buildings with solar rooftop systems (recommendation of the monument preservation authorities). The example of the Manuel elementary school buildings, most of which unfortunately have suboptimal insulation, also shows that high design standards are compatible with optimal use of solar energy, as the exemplary PV roof design confirms.
